Juan Esquivel de Barahona (c. 1560- c. 1623): Missarum liber primus (Complete Edition)

We are proud to release the complete edition of the Missarum liber primus by Juan Esquivel de Barahona (c. 1560- c. 1623).

Published in 1608, the Missarum liber primus contains the antiphon Asperges me, three Masses based on motets by Francisco Guerrero (Ave virgo sanctissima, Ductus est Jesus and Gloriose confessor Domini), the six-voice Missa Batalla (with the final Agnus Dei for twelve voices!) on the famous chanson La guerre by Clement Janequin (which also serves as a subtle homage to Francisco Guerrero as he also published a mass on that chanson, the Missa de la batalla escoutez), one hexachord Mass for eight voices (the Missa Ut re mi fa sol la) and a five-voice Missa pro defunctis (Requiem) with the final six-voice motet In paradisum.

Sebastián de Vivanco (c. 1551-1622): Missa Super octo tonos (SATB) (2021 Edition)

One of the most extraordinary masses by Vivanco, based on the eight plainchant tones. The Hosanna is the true climax of the work (not the Agnus Dei as usual, which is scored for five voices), an astonishing tour de force with a double canon scored for eight voices.

José Gay († 1587): Motets for 5vv, 6vv and 7vv

We are proud to announce the release of our edition of the motets by the unknown Spanish Renaissance composer José Gay (†1587). According to Luis Antonio González Marín in his article in the Diccionario de la Música Española e Hispanoamericana, José Gay was born in Valencia in an unknown date. He was the chapel master in Gandía, and in his last months he moved to Zaragoza where he got the post of chapel master in the Cathedral.

The motets of José Gay show a style we can see in composers that never worked outside Spain such as Alonso Lobo, Sebastián de Vivanco, Alonso de Tejeda or Ambrosio Cotes: rhythm variety, expressive harmonies and a certain degree of counterpoint complexity.

We are publishing the edition of all the fourteen motets of José Gay in E-VAcp 20, an astonishing collection of motets of 16th and early 17th centuries handwritten in a set of partbooks held in the Colegio y Seminario del Corpus Christi del Patriarca in Valencia (Spain). There are eight motets for five voices (Sancti Dei omnes, Fuit homo missus a Deo, Emendemus in melius, Dominus qui eripuit, Misereris omnium Domine, Beata es Maria, Regina caeli and Reminiscere Domine), five for six voices (Dum complerentur, Super flumina Babylonis, Media vita, Descendens Jesus de monte and Factum est praelium) and one for seven voices (Angelus Domini).
