Sebastián de Vivanco (c. 1551-1622): Missa Quarti toni (SATB)

The Missa Quarti toni is one of the two shortest Masses (alongside with the Missa Sexti toni) of the Liber missarum (1608). Unlike other Vivanco Masses, the Missa Quarti toni does not add any additional voices in any of its parts.

Alonso Lobo (1555-1617): Versa est in luctum (SSATTB)

The most famous work by Alonso Lobo. This astonishing six-voice motet was composed for the funeral of Philip II of Spain. Although there are lots of editions available online, they seem to miss some very crucial musica ficta: the most interesting omission occurs in measure 65, where there is a "hidden" English cadence (a clash of a minor second in a cadence that is common in Franco-Flemish music composers of the mid-sixteenth century like Gombert or Clemens non Papa) that appears in some Spanish works in the late sixteenth century like the one in Versa est in luctum by Sebastián de Vivanco or Vadam et circuibo civitatem by Tomás Luis de Victoria.

Francisco Garro († 1623): Missa Saeculorum primi toni (SSATB)

Our second edition of the Opera aliquot (Lisbon, 1609) by the Spanish composer Francisco Garro is a Mass inspired by the Missa Saeculorum amen by Francisco Guerrero. The Mass is based on the melodic formula of the Tone I to sing a Psalm or a Magnificat.

You can buy or download this score here. Remember, you can buy our scores for the price you want to support Ars Subtilior Editions!

Guerrero was a fruitful inspiration for many Spanish and European composers: we have already published the Missa Ave virgo sanctissima by Géry de Ghersem, the Missa Ave virgo sanctissima by Juan de Esquivel, the Missa Maria Magdalene and the Missa Beata Dei genitrix by Alonso Lobo, the Missa Sancta Maria and the Missa Dicebat Jesus by Duarte Lobo, to name a few!

Pedro Rimonte (1565-1627): Missa Lapidabant Stephanum (SSATB)

The third Mass in the Missae sex IV, V et VI vocum (Antwerp, 1604) by the Spanish composer Pedro Rimonte (1565-1627) is based on a Palestrina Mass (like the Missa In diebus illis). Both the Sanctus (that has an ellaborated double canon) and the Agnus Dei are set for six voices.

Cristóbal de Montemayor (fl. 1583-1600): Puer qui natus est (SSAT)

Cristóbal de Montemayor (or Cristoforo Montemayor) is a rather unknown Spanish Renaissance composer. The only source for his works is the Liber primus cum octo et sex et quinque et quatuor vocibus (Napoli, 1593), a collection with psalms for double choir, hymns, motets and a couple of Masses. Though the double choir psalms and hymns are quite uninteresting, the works that stand out are the motets for four, five and six voices.

We are publishing the motets for four, five and six voices by Montemayor in Ars Subtilior Editions. The copy of the Liber primus (I-RN Mss musicali 135) has a lot of errors (text, accidentals, values...) that have been corrected for our editions.

Puer qui natus est is a four-voice motet for high voices (SSAT) dedicated to St. John the Baptist.

Salve sponsa Dei is a four-voice motet dedicated to Saint Clare. Montemayor uses the first notes of the melody of the Salve regina in the beginning of the motet.

Sebastián de Vivanco (c. 1551-1622): Missa O quam suavis est (SATB)

One of the best Masses (if not the best) by Sebastián de Vivanco, based on his own motet (its edition can be purchased here). The highlights of the Mass are the Pleni sunt (for five voices with a retrograde canon) and the final Agnus Dei (for seven voices!), where the head-motif of the motet appears in the Superius 2 with long values. A masterpiece that deserves many performances and recordings.

Cristóbal de Montemayor (fl. 1583-1600): Virgo prudentissima (SATTB)

Virgo prudentissima is an outstanding motet for five voices (SSATB). It alternates parts with vibrant counterpoint with phrases of expressive homophony (like in pulchra ut luna).

Francisco Garro († 1623): Missa Maria Magdalene (SSATBB)

The Spanish composer Francisco Garro published this wonderful Mass based on the famous motet by Francisco Guerrero on his Opera aliquot (Lisbon, 1609). This is a very different Mass from the one by Alonso Lobo (available here). The final Agnus Dei is scored for eight voices with a double canon In diapason.
