We are proud to announce the release of our edition of the motets by the unknown Spanish Renaissance composer José Gay (†1587). According to Luis Antonio González Marín in his article in the Diccionario de la Música Española e Hispanoamericana, José Gay was born in Valencia in an unknown date. He was the chapel master in Gandía, and in his last months he moved to Zaragoza where he got the post of chapel master in the Cathedral.
The motets of José Gay show a style we can see in composers that never worked outside Spain such as Alonso Lobo, Sebastián de Vivanco, Alonso de Tejeda or Ambrosio Cotes: rhythm variety, expressive harmonies and a certain degree of counterpoint complexity.
We are publishing the edition of all the fourteen motets of José Gay in E-VAcp 20, an astonishing collection of motets of 16th and early 17th centuries handwritten in a set of partbooks held in the Colegio y Seminario del Corpus Christi del Patriarca in Valencia (Spain). There are eight motets for five voices (Sancti Dei omnes, Fuit homo missus a Deo, Emendemus in melius, Dominus qui eripuit, Misereris omnium Domine, Beata es Maria, Regina caeli and Reminiscere Domine), five for six voices (Dum complerentur, Super flumina Babylonis, Media vita, Descendens Jesus de monte and Factum est praelium) and one for seven voices (Angelus Domini).

Absalon fili mi by Josquin (or Pierre de la Rue) is one of the most extraordinary works of the Renaissance. This anonymous Mass is the only extant work based on that motet. Although it is a short Mass (it lacks the Hosanna, Benedictus or a second Agnus Dei) it reflects the "modulation" from the original motet (what Lowinsky called "Secret Chromatic Art") on three occasions, (the Kyrie, Gloria and Credo).
This previously unpublished Mass is an extraordinary work, and we want to thank Alessandra Chiarelli and Armando Tomesani from the Archivio Musicale di S. Petronio for their help with the access to the original source.

One of the masterpieces of the Spanish Renaissance music, a wonderful seven-voice motet by Bernardino de Ribera, the master of Tomás Luis de Victoria and Sebastián de Vivanco.
