Guglielmo Gonzaga (1538-1587), Duke of Mantua, published his Sacrae cantiones quinque vocum in Venice in 1583. De spinis velut orta (SATTB) is the first motet of the collection, dedicated to the feast of Saint Barbara (In festo S. Barbare 4 Decembris).
