We are glad to announce the release of the complete edition of the Motteti a sei voci by the Italian composer Innocenzo (or Innocentio) Alberti (c. 1535-1615). Printed in Ferrara in 1594, this is the only extant collection of motets by Alberti, which contains eighteen motets for six voices. It was dedicated to Margherita Gonzaga, Duchess of Ferrara and wife of Alfonso II d'Este.
The motets are beautifully composed with a conservative and interesting style (with no chromaticism or homophony), and some highlights include the works with a cantus firmus: Ave Maria is surprisingly combined with the plainchant Ecce ancilla Domini; the outstanding Adeste, castae virgines contains the melody Omnis spiritus laudet Dominum, and the motet dedicated to Saint Margaret (a quite rare saint to appear in Renaissance motets) Hic es dies egregius, with the plainchant Sancta Margareta, ora pro nobis, is without doubt a homage to Margherita Gonzaga.
