Francesco Portinaro (c. 1520 - c. 1577): Absterget Deus (SATTB) [Primi frutti de motetti, 1548]

Primi frutti de motetti a cinque voci (Venice, 1548) was the first collection of motets by the Italian composer Francesco Portinaro (c. 1520-c. 1577).

Born in Padua, Portinaro worked for important institutions such as the Accademia dei Costanti of Vicenza, the Accademia degli Elevati of Padua or the Accademia Filarmonica of Verona. According to Maria Archetto "Portinaro's clearly constructed, fluid and reserved polyphonic style was praised during his lifetime".

Giovanni Battista Corvo (fl. 1554-5): Surge propera (SATTB) [Mutettorum quinque vocum, 1555]

We know very little about the life of Giovanni Battista Corvo (fl. 1554-5). His Liber primus mutettorum quinque vocum was published by Antonio Gardano in Venice, in 1555. He was probably from Como and dedicated the collection to Alessandro Farnese. Some of Corvo's motets are rather uncommon, as they are designated to unusual Saints like St. Julian, St. Severin and St Provino di Como ("Beati Provini Episcop Comensis").

Surge propera is a sensual and puzzling five-voice motet that starts the Mutettorum quinque vocum by Giovanni Battista Corvo (fl. 1554-5).

Tomás Luis de Victoria (c. 1548-1611): Missa Ave maris stella (E-Tc 30 Version) (SATB) (2023 Edition)

We are publishing a brand new reedition of the E-Tc 30, a manuscript choirbook in the Toledo Cathedral (Spain) copied by Johannes Parvus. It features earlier and unique versions of three Masses (Ave maris stella, De Beata Maria and Gaudeamus), three Magnificats, the Psalm Nisi Dominus and the eight-voice Salve Regina. The beautiful four-voice Missa Ave maris stella is scored for four voices, with five voices in the Agnus Dei.

JUST A SHORT NOTE

I have been hidden under Ars Subtilior Editions for quite a long time. However, it was high time I sent out a few words to the world.

I have travelled all over Europe (Lisbon, Coimbra, Bologna, Regensburg, Aachen, Treviso…) for more than a decade searching for lost treasures that I considered had to be discovered and shared. I have spent thousands of Euros out of pocket on travelling and on digital images of original sources to make world premiere editions of music that has not been performed for centuries. For better or worse, I have always worked freelance and I am independent so none of my trips or purchases of digital images have been covered by an institution or supported by anyone other than me. I could not estimate how much money and time I have spent in these years. Also, I am not interested in doing so as I always did it for the sake of it. But for sure, I could have started paying off a house.

That said, the reason for this short note is to announce that from now on, all the scores will have a minimum price of 0,01€/$. As before, it is up to you to contribute with a more generous amount. Establishing that minimum amount means nothing to me as I will still have to pay Payhip and PayPal fees. However, I consider it is a necessary step to avoid massive downloads, to make people aware of how much has Ars Subtilior Editions cost in terms of work, time and money, and last but not least, for the music itself.

This is a first step. If nothing changes, I am afraid I will take further measures such as closing Ars Subtilior Editions either temporarily or permanently. I hope everyone understands.

Gioseffo Guami (c. 1542-1611): Lamentationes Hieremiae Prophetae (Venice, 1588) (6vv-8vv) (Complete Edition)

Gioseffo Guami (c. 1542-1611) was an italian composer and a member of a long family of musicians that also included Francesco, Domenico, Vincenzo and Valerio. Gioseffo was the most illustrious member of the family.

A neglected work by Gioseffo Guami is the Lamentationes Hieremiae Prophetae, published in Venice in 1588 by Giacomo Vincenti. The only extant copy of this printed collection is now in the Biblioteca capitolare di Verona.

The Lamentationes contains nine Lamentations, three for Maundy Thursday (Feria quinta), three for Good Friday (Feria sexta) and three for Holy Saturday (Sabbato Sancto). All of them are scored for six voices (SSATBB), except the last one, that is set for eight voices (SSSAATBB). Each set of three Lamentations repeats the same music for the last verse (Jerusalem, Jerusalem, convertere ad Dominum  Deum tuum). Again, only the ninth Lamentation is different, and uses a polychoral setting for this verse.

This nine gems could be defined as the halfway between the music for Holy Week composed by Victoria in 1585 and by Gesualdo in 1611. While it has some of the emotion and fervour of Victoria's music, these Lamentations are also full of some of the experimentation signatures that would be found more than twenty years later in Gesualdo's Responsoria, such as chromaticism, unexpected modulations, extremely low or high pitches... The Lamentationes Hieremiae Prophetae is a masterpiece that deserves to be studied, performed and recorded.
