A Book of Masses for Alfonso II d'Este, Duke of Ferrara

We are proud to release the complete edition of the Masses in the manuscript I-MOe MS {alpha}.M.1.1 (Biblioteca Estense Universitaria, Modena). This choirbook was probably copied in Ferrara around 1559-1560, and contains five Masses that were clearly dedicated to the Duke of Ferrara, Alfonso II d'Este (1533-1597): the composers were all linked to the Ferrarese court: Francesco della (or "dalla") Viola (†1568), Luzzasco Luzzaschi (c. 1545-1607) and Adrian Willaert (c. 1495-1562).

The five Masses of the I-MOe MS {alpha}.M.1.1 are unica. Furthermore, the Masses by della Viola and Luzzaschi are in fact their only extant masses.

The most represented composer in this manuscript, Francesco della Viola, has three five-voice masses in it: Missa Veni Sancte Spiritus, Missa Ad beneplacitum and Missa Lauda Sion. All of them are works beautifully crafted and surprising for various reasons: the Missa Veni Sancte Spiritus has in the Sanctus and Agnus Dei a cantus firmus dedicated to the Duke of Ferrara with the words Inclitae Ferrariae Alphonso Duci Quinto laeta longa saecula. The Agnus Dei I and II are scored for six voices, and the outstanding Agnus Dei III is scored for seven voices with a non-indicated canon by contrary motion of the cantus firmus. The Missa Ad beneplacitum begins with five voices in the Kyrie and the Gloria and increases the number of voices to six in the Credo, seven in the Sanctus and eight in the Agnus Dei.

The Missa Ad beneplacitum by Luzzasco Luzzaschi, probably composed freely (or based on one or various unknown models) is scored for five voices except for the Agnus Dei, which is scored for six voices.

The most famous composer on I-MOe MS {alpha}.M.1.1 is Adrian Willaert. The Missa Mittit ad virginem (probably one of his last Masses, if not the last), copied only in this manuscript, is an spectacular work based on his own motet. In the last Agnus Dei, where the number of voices is increased to seven, a thrilling homage to Alfonso II d'Este can be found again, including a mensuration canon between two voices with a plainchant with the words Pater Alphonso annue Secundo Duci Ferrariae.

Music from the Rusconi Codex (Museo Internazionale e Biblioteca della Musica di Bologna, I-Bc Q.19)

We are proud to announce the forthcoming release of an extensive selection of works from the so-called Rusconi Codex (I-Bc Q.19). Now kept in the Museo Internazionale e Biblioteca della Musica di Bologna, this small choirbook, probably copied c. 1518 for the Cathedral of Padua, contains 95 works, mostly motets and a few masses (some of them unica) and, according to Robert Nosow, was copied by one of its most represented composers, a certain Renaldo (probably Petrus de Renaldis, died in 1521).

The Rusconi Codex is one of the most important music manuscripts in northern Italy in the first third of the 16th century. We are publishing a selection of over 60 works by Italian and French composers such as Jean Mouton, Renaldo, Jacquet de Mantua, Costanzo Festa, Lupus, Pierre Moulu, Maistre Jhan and others.

Sebastián de Vivanco (c. 1551-1622): Missa Beata Maria Virgine in Sabbato (SATB)

One of the shortest Masses (it lacks the Credo) in the Liber missarum (1608) by the Spanish composer Sebastián de Vivanco (c. 1551-1622). While the rest of the parts of the Mass is scored for four voices, the last Hosanna in excelsis in the Sanctus is a spectacular masterpiece in itself, as it is scored for eight voices with a canon 4 in 1 (four voices sing the same melody in four different clefs).

Jacobus Vaet (c. 1529-1567): Qui operatus est Petro (SATTTB)

No. 11 of Modulationes quinque et sex vocum (Venice, 1562). This six-voice motet by Jacobus Vaet has a clear symbolic meaning. There is canon indicated in the Sextus (Tenor 3) which says "Iratus Petrus, Paulo contrarius exit, sed Paulus Petri clavem, tandem obtinet ense" ("The wrathful Peter runs counter to Paul, but in the end Paul obtains, through the sword, the key of Peter"). A key and a sword, the attributes of Peter and Paul, are placed in the beginning and the end of the canon. The Quintus (Tenor 2) sings the same melody in retrograde motion. As Willem Elders points out in his book Symbolic Scores: "Finally, through the sword, that is, through beheading, Paul obtained Peter's key and could enter the kingdom of heaven".

Bernardino de Ribera (c. 1520-c.1580): Rex autem David (AATTB)

One of the most fascinating motets from the Spanish Renaissance. Bernardino de Ribera (master of Tomás Luis de Victoria and Sebastián de Vivanco) follows the tradition of mourning motets of David and his son Absalon, like Absalon fili mi by Josquin or Pierre de La Rue (and the anonymous Mass based on it, available here) or Lugebat David Absalon by Gombert. The placement of some sharps in the source suggest an unusual and surprising chromatic reading of the work in the word Absalon. An extraordinary masterpiece that, in the words of Bruno Turner, is "weeping in sharps and flats".

Innocenzo Alberti (c. 1535-1615): Motteti a sei voci (1594) (Complete Edition)

We are glad to announce the release of the complete edition of the Motteti a sei voci by the Italian composer Innocenzo (or Innocentio) Alberti (c. 1535-1615). Printed in Ferrara in 1594, this is the only extant collection of motets by Alberti, which contains eighteen motets for six voices. It was dedicated to Margherita Gonzaga, Duchess of Ferrara and wife of Alfonso II d'Este.

The motets are beautifully composed with a conservative and interesting style (with no chromaticism or homophony), and some highlights include the works with a cantus firmus: Ave Maria is surprisingly combined with the plainchant Ecce ancilla Domini; the outstanding Adeste, castae virgines contains the melody Omnis spiritus laudet Dominum, and the motet dedicated to Saint Margaret (a quite rare saint to appear in Renaissance motets) Hic es dies egregius, with the plainchant Sancta Margareta, ora pro nobis, is without doubt a homage to Margherita Gonzaga.
